Most people associate March with St. Patrick’s Day and the beginning of Spring.  However to sports enthusiasts, March is the greatest month of the year.  March Madness has become a huge event in the sports world, due to coverage by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), as it gives fans something to focus on between the end of the Superbowl and the start of baseball spring training.  Even if you are not an avid sports fan, it is hard to avoid all the constant marketing and commercials for the month long event.

Whether it is being sent emails to create a bracket, commercials on ticket purchasing or mobile apps to download for multiple game viewership, March Madness has become one of the finest examples of sports event marketing.  Unlike the Superbowl, this event takes place over multiple weeks, creating endless promotional opportunities.  Throughout the month, you constantly hear the terms “Selection Sunday”, “Sweet 16”, “Final Four” and much more.  So, how does a non-profit organization, such as the NCAA, utilize their marketing skills to become memorable?

Promoting throughout all social media by utilizing hashtags, retweets and likes.

  1. Using apps and contests to engage consumers
  2. Executing newsworthy content that entice “free” press coverage
  3. Advertisers hosting events to connect their brand with March Madness
  4. Creating easy and recognizable logos and slogans
